Here is a rare beautiful old Viennese violin made by Joannes Georgius Huber in 1760. The violin has two labels, one of Joannes Georgius Huber and the other Jan Basta who restored it.

There is also some writing on the inside on parchment that looks very old and interesting. Joannes Georgius Huber was one of the rarest makers of the Old Vienna School and known for using the woods of old viols in his instruments. This violin was previously restored by Basta, also a great maker, who made a new scroll for the violin (and can be compared to his other instruments), doubled the top edges and made a few repairs.

There are no soundpost crack repairs on the instrument. The woods are very old and extremely beautiful in this instrument, especially the highly figured maple back that likely came from a much older instrument. It would be interesting having a dendro made to determine the age of the woods. The violin is in very good playable condition and needs no further work.

The tone is beautiful and of a very refined, sweet, even, and open quality. It has the tone of the old masters. HUBER, Johann Georg Born 1741, died 1772 Vienna Austria.

Joannes Giorgius Huber / fecit Viennae 1761. A violin and lute maker famous in his time, whose works are even more appreciated today because they are characterized by cleanliness and a gentle, bright tone. The Schottenstift in Vienna owns a good violin from 1771. His successor was Phillipp Wurm.
