A LOVELY SELECTION OF THE INCREASINGLY SCARCE 2nd WATERMARK (1915). WIDE CROWN OVER NARROW'A' AUSTRALIAN KANGAROO STAMPS V. The 1915 2nd Watermark issue of Australian Kangaroos is far more scarce than the 1913 1st Watermark and the later 3rd Watermark & Small Multiple and CofA Watermark Kangaroo issues. The 2nd Watermark Roos were printed by the Government Printer J. COOKE in one single printing for each value during the period Dec.

Ember 1914 through to early-to-mid 1915 (the 5/- was printed in August 1915). This was one of the shortest definitive printing runs in the world. THE AUSTRALIAN COMMONWEALTH SPECIALISTS CATALOGUE KANGAROOS (ACSC 2017). Second Watermark (Type2) An emergency issue on Georgian paper due to the non-arrival of stocks of the First Watermark paper. This statement helps explain why the printing period was so short. It also serves to explain why the Watermark itself is so often'off-center' on the stamp. This is because the paper was never really designed for the 2nd Watermark Kangaroo stamp. The Australian Commonwealth Specialists Catalogue KING GEORGE V (ACSC 2007) states: The George V stamp was of different dimensions to the Kangaroo design, and watermarked Crown over A paper from a new dandy roll was required. This paper (Type 2) was received in June 1914 and used exclusively up to 1918 (for the KGV first issue).

So the 1915 printing of the Kangaroo stamp on 2nd Watermark paper was made on paper actually sized to match the KING GEORGE V stamp (as a'stop-gap' and only for a very short time). The subsequent 3rd Watermark Kangaroos printed from the mid 1915s to the mid 1920s were printed in much large volumes (by millions) before the Small Multiple Kangaroos were introduced.

This means that the 1915 is sue Kangaroo on 2nd Watermark paper is much scarcer than its marsupial counterparts and this is reflected in the Catalogue Values cited by all the Kangaroo references. The colours here are all nicely subdued (and very typical of the 2nd WATERMARK issue). A very pretty collection of these.

Marsupials the 2/- Brown carries a lovely. Not often offered in such fine condition as this.. _gsrx_vers_1251 GS 8.2.1 (1251).
