Very Fine Antique Flatback Mandolin. This is not exactly a flatback, more of a wedge shaped or boat shaped back. This is a beautiful looking instrument, with a finely grained two piece back with matching sides, spruce top with inlaid scratch plate set flush to the table and original flush set tuners.
It has a well carved bridge and inlaid purfling with an attractive edging of fruitwood. There are a couple of hairline cracks, around the back edge by the tailpiece, which often occur along the grain as the wood dries over a century, but they are sound, with no movement, and primarily cosmetic. It has strong, bright tone and good volume, with the action at the twelfth fret a very comfortable and playable 92 thousandths of an inch, or 2.3mm.
